before we get carried away with this 'yes we did' business - we haven't done much of anything yet. this is the first, and easiest step. the man is elected - and now the challenge is fulfilling the promises that this event holds. obama needs to be held to higher standards than any head of state that has come before him, because there's no reason barack obama shouldn't be the greatest president in american history up to this point. it's not just the past eight years we need to recover from. that's why i proudly and futilely cast my vote for cynthia mckinney this morning: because there are litterally hundreds of years of american history that from which we need to recover - hundreds of years of injustice and shitty presidents that we need to make up for. and ultimately, i believe something more radical than the democratic party is needed to fulfill the promise of the united states.

but tonight i'm a bit overwhelmed with joy and hope. this could be an amazing start of something. they keep trying to tell me this is the most important election of my lifetime, and i kinda hope they're right. i hope this is the turning point.

and also, i totally wish i could be on foss hill tonight: shit is almost assuredly bananas.

i know the news is old now, but still, for real mccain? such a ridiculous pick for vp. talk about no experience... and it is such a pathetic ploy to go after hillary's people. but knowing the idiots populating middle america, it might just work.

the sweetest tidbit of news about her is that, turns out her 17-year old daughter is 5 months pregnant. WOW. conservative values. and certainly no abortion allowed. that, in addition to her down syndrome child, are just two shining (unfortunate) examples of how the unavailability of abortion can affects individuals. and they are a well off family. p.s. what kind of mother has time to run for vp with a down syndrome infant at home and 4 other kids to worry about?

if she were a democrat, we wouldn't hear the end of the mud slinging attacks about having an underage pregnant daughter, not to mention much much more respectable critique of her policy positions and complete lack of experience. BUT, she is a republican, which means her political enemies have a little too much dignity to stoop that low. but, oh, i wish we had some sort of disownable slimeball to unleash upon her, you know, like the typical republican pundit.

So Palin brought out this news to quell rumors that her daughter is the real mother of her down syndrome child. But, maybe this pregnancy is just a staight lie, and the kid really is her grandchild. This would play out as a sad "miscarriage" for her daughter come december, conveniently past election time and all that media interest jazz. I think full clarity on the truth demands some proof that the daughter is not the mother of the past child (DNA test, perhaps publication of the birth certificate), or some compelling evidence that Palin was actually pregnant while in office. Supposedly she did some fashion mag photo shoot when the down syndrome kid was 5 months in the womb. Also, her water broke, then she immediately thereafter took a 12 hour plane ride, then had the kid. So, questions remain. But, all this stuff is second hand blog entry info, and thus not reliable. It is something to think about though. If she's lying she would definitely get canned as vp candidate, methinks.

hey dudes. first of all, happy shark week - i saw some good mythbusters shark week special action last night, and there's some guy talking about being attacked by a great white. les stroud (still so much better than bear 'phony ass' grills) will apparently teach us at some point about surviving sharks. great whites have always been my favorite - absolutely insane animals. there's some sort of sharks and rays exhibit at the new england aquarium in boston, which they advertise with signs that read: 'SHAAAHHHHHHKKK!' (this is how every fuckin' product advertises in boston).
pauri and i have started talking about getting an apartment. i've been pokin' around on craigslist. the way i view it, boston is more expensive than providence (sveenks) but less expensive than nyc (bowser), but probably a lot cooler than providence, if not the crazy behemoth that is new york. bike tours are going well, i'm putting in a lot of hours and starting to get the hang of it. figure i gotta rake in the dough while it's biking/tourist season.

i have stumbled upon a book called "without sanctuary." for those of you who know, the books makes you cringe, scared (as a colored person), and angry at the same time. the book depicts how, upon the advent of photography, lynchings, mostly of african/italian americans were captured by snapshots and sold as postcards. the pics in the book are truly gruesome. as a point of reference, i saw the most horrible films captured of survivors of the holocaust and from north korea, but none of them come close to the sheer awe and incredulity of what i saw in this book. i seriously warn you, the book is not for the faint of heart. the book shows images of 10, sometimes thousands, of people standing around a corpse of a dead body. mind you, the background of these are not too different from you or i. there are educated people, blue-collar, white-collar, people who just stand around a dead body as if it were nothing. looking at their faces you see no remorse, nor does it seem to dawn upon them of the horrific act that just occurred to an innocent person. i have posted a link to their website, however i warn you, these pictures are truly graphic. i should also note that the notes on the postcards are even more frightening than the pictures themselves.

anyways, on to non-youtube things, such as me.

so i was all up in europe starting the friday after graduation. went to belfast, dublin area for my cousin's wedding, oslo and the norwegian countryside, and stockholm (all with my pop and sister). then i was in amsterdam for 6 days and dublin for 2 with julia. twas quite the trip. norway was the best part, for sure. place is extremely expensive though, but once i got over that (my father was paying anyways), it was da bomb dot com. dudes there are all looking like me, except they all gel up their hair crazy, and the local scenary... wooo! (and yes i am referring both to hot women and natural sights). there are undoubtedly thousands upon thousands of awesome waterfalls, mountains, and lakes in that fine country. we also got to visit my third cousin for an afternoon, on her commercial farm. it was great. very distant relatives and awesome homeland. and that was just norway. ireland was great as usual, though i had better beer and food on my way back through dublin. wedding was fun, except too many old people in my family. also, no one in ireland has any rhythm. but i "did" ireland in '06, so i didn't do much touristing this time. belfast was nice, for the two nights i was there. certainly plenty of history with IRA/loyalist conflict, which ties into religious stuff. they are only recently coming out of the "troubles" of the past. and then amsterdam, i've been to, and it was ok. a week with julia alone was rough at times, but we survived eachother. saw eurocup games in netherlands when the team was playing, which was great, and got to enjoy many aspects of amsterdamese life, including that ganj, which i've decided ain't really my thing (plus illegal and weird to do outside of college). so it was a fine trip, indeed.

i got home last friday, and have really been doing very little. this past week was scheduled for job-searching, researching stuff, but i was just getting my summer on as of late. seeing friends, watching the entire star wars saga (one to go; i've really come to like the first three now, with their fairly complex plots beneath the oft-critiqued film quality. but i just love star wars, no matter what). i've also been playing tennis again, with my momma. got a new racket earlier this week, and have been steadily improving. pandian will need to give me some free lessons though, so i can start not-sucking. tuesday, i start my summer job, working for int'l student admissions office, once again, to register new international peoples in public schools. i got a raise and kinda a promotion, as i have more duties this year. we'll see how it goes being a bureaucrat again. i was a little too uptight last summer, although the job demands it.

and otherwise... my house had (still has) fleas, it sucked(s). i've read a great rwanda book by philip goerevitch, and then the omnivore's dilemma by some other guy, which i highly recommend. i have a lot to say about food in america, maybe another post. i'm really ready to not live at home, but it will have to wait till september once i can actively find a job. i'm planning on dc or new york for my near future.

so it's all good in the hood. i could use some more direction and independence, but generally, things are going alright. i oft dream of people from college. patterson was in me dreams last night, but with shaved beard and a high annoying voice. lol.

So it's about 2:30 am right now. I made the mistake of sleeping most of the day and thus, jetlag is back. Hopefully I'll cure it over the weekend. The next couple of weeks are going to be quite hectic, fairly different from this week where I've done nothing (been very relaxing).

marriage in california

i've always been proud that massachusetts was the first state to legalize marriage. it's an issue that needs to be pushed in a more radical direction, i think. if we're going to live in a society in which government authorization is necessary to symbolically and (more importantly) legally legitimate a family or relationship, than such a right has to be freely available to all types of families, regardless of the gender, sexuality, or number of folks involved. the boston globe ran an article last sunday about the push to create a legal method for granting friendships some of the benefits of marriage (which, to be fair, can be accomplished with living wills, durable power of attorney, etc). anyway, i found a kinda touching video about the california decision.

I'm kinda going crazy right now. And considering that the reason I came to India so early was so that I could be here on my sister's birthday and didn't arrive (b/c of the delays) until there was only a half hour left of it, I'm kinda sad that I wasn't in the Hub for the game. Especially because I would have been at the game.

Anyways, if any of y'all watched the game and saw Paul Pierce and Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett crying after it was all said and done, you now know why I cared about this team. My dad had a great time at the game and said he's never been in a stadium that was crazier than the Garden was, and we've been to a World Cup semi before, so I'm impressed with the amount of love by the fans in Boston.

I miss you all and will update here and on flickr as the weeks progress, and I do want to say that when I get back, I'm working on getting weekends off from work, and I want to have everyone at my house at some point to see the place and chill by the beach and go kayaking (yes, I've always been a badass, and now I'm a badass with a kayak) and drink and eat and have some fun.

Be safe everyone, and pick up the slack with the posting, as it's a bit more difficult for me to do so here. I wish I had brought my Ubuntu cd's so I could replace the spyware/adware/virus filled computer that my cousins are using with a good OS. Miss you all. GREEN 17 BABY!!!

I Live

Hey, guys. Sorry for not posting anything earlier. As soon as I got past feeling incredibly crappy and unwilling to do much of anything that required thought all the time I was suddenly working in New Haven and I didn't have any time to do anything ever! But work's eased up a bit, so I thought I'd ramble incessantly at you and the internet for a while.

So after gradutation [sic] I spent two weeks at home not wanting to be at home. It was bizarre; I was essentially shellshocked, being torn away from school so fast. I didn't have any time to adjust, to ease out of Wesleyan. It was just over and I was at fucking home again. The worst part, of course, is that I haven't even been able to move onto the next thing, you know? Two weeks at home with no direction or anything to do. Most of my friends aren't even in Maine for most of this summer. On the plus side, I did use my time to read The Sound and the Fury and re-read Dune. The former is amazing, the latter was... not as good as I recalled from high school, when I first read it. I suppose that's to be expected.

At least I'm New Haven (at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas) and have something to do, now. Quite a lot to do, actually. I'm working minimum eight-hour days six days a week. It's only a three-week job, granted, but I'll definitely be pretty fucking exhausted by the end of it. Not to mention in better shape; I'm on my feet all day, constantly lifting heavy shit, and I'd forgotten how much better I eat when I'm buying my own food. So that's a plus.

Another plus is my festival assignment this week. I'm Assistant Stage Manager to a guy named Ray Dobson, who's both the Technical Director for the festival and the Stage Manager for this week's concert series in a beautiful Yale Law School courtyard. Ray is basically an enormous badass. The man knows how to do everything. He's got these three roadcase toolboxes on wheels, one of which is as tall as me, that contain... just about everything you could ever need for building or working with electrics. He's also enormous and a bit terrifying, but he seems to like me, which is good. I'm looking forward to learning all sorts of useful shit from him.

What else? I've finally got a day off on Friday, and I'm going to visit Gedney in Middletown around dinnertime. Still no new developments there, really. Feelings are lame, as we all know. Anyway, she's working on Friday until 5:00, and I have nothing to do all day, soooo... if anyone wants to come to New Haaaaaven, give me a call.

I miss you all RAH-ther a lot.

So this trip hasn't begun as well as it could have. My six hour delay at JFK (bad weather so the airport closed) resulted in me missing my connection in Brussels. So now, instead of going from Brussels straight to Chennai, I go from Brussels to Delhi, then Delhi to Chennai. The funny thing is that I booked this flight so that I wouldn't have to go through Delhi. Oh well, God must really want me to see Indira Gandhi International Airport again.

so i keep meaning to post on this, and have ideas for longer entries but i figured just a basic summary of what i've been up to may be in order. i just got back from an overnight of backpacking with my dad up in NH. we climbed mt. madison, part of the presidential range, a few peaks over from the famous (to new englanders?) mt. washington. it's a strange mountain range - it's extremely popular, part of the appalacian trail, and seems to draw a good deal of inexperienced folks (myself somewhat included, but i came across families with young kids on their way up today), yet before you get above the tree line you come across signs stating something to the effect of: 'you are about to enter an area that has the worst weather in america. many people have died of exposure in the zone, even in the summer. if the weather looks bad turn back now.' i'm not sure if 'worst weather in the us' or mt. washington's claim to have the 'worst weather in the world' are legit, but the warning certainly is. now i am exhausted, and hopefully will be able to stay up for the celts game tonight (if you give a toast in the near future, throw them in for pauri's sake).

last sunday i went to the WBCN river rave - a local radio show's annual music fest - with dan (who y'all probably met, guitar in red morning) and taylor (drums in red morning). a bunch of the early bands were really shitty (remember filter? remember everlast?! motherfuckers had nothing to play but their lame-ass hits from the 90s) so we spent the early hours of the afternoon tailgating and getting trashed. zaza responded to my drunk text later on in the evening and was like 'you were drunk at 2:30? i'm jealous!.' sobered up in the pit during pennywise, and was hung over by the time stone temple pilots hit the stage (STP is apparently back together? they put on a good show). i think we all basically agreed that the day was a lot more fun than we'd thought it'd be.

other than that, been lookin' to buy a new guitar, been rehearsing a bit with Red Morning (yeah, we get capitalized. also, auditioning a new singer tuesday.), been debating whether to work for the writers' express again this summer (i'd be a coach, so much easier than being a counselor), and been apply my ADD mind to the job search. how the fuck are y'all? post motherfuckers, don't just leave this shit to your boys in boston.

To give you all a little bit of inspiration (except for Patrick, who definitely doesn't need any more at this point, I present a selection of dragons for your viewing pleasure.

A Black Dragon. This is not a racism thing, he is just blackish/purplish. They are Chaotic Evil and not the most intelligent of the Chromatic (evil) dragons, but quite formidable. So maybe it is a little bit racist. They do not breathe fire, but rather spit huge gouts of acid.

Generally they live in marshy areas. This one is sitting on a rock. WTF?







This here's a Brass Dragon. It's one of the Metallic varieties, which are all Good-aligned. Brass Dragons in particular are Chaotic Good, and some of the least skilled in combat. Still, they are dragons and if pressured will put a sever hurt on you. Seriously. They love chatting with both friends and strangers for hours on end. They are just so good-natured! They can breathe a long line of fire, or a cone-shaped burst of gas that puts you to sleep.

If I was a Dragon, I would probably like to be a Brass Dragon. Yay!








This Dragon comes from China. I hope that fire isn't hurting him. I guess Chinese Dragons can't fly, since they don't have wings, but I've been wrong before. Perhaps they just swim through air like a flying snake.

How could I forget? SM101 by Jay Wiseman. It's been around for awhile, and while some folks probably aren't too big on it, it's a pretty safe bet as far as introductory BDSM books go. The book really covers all the bases, and is quite informative. His writing style is quite easy to get in to, and the book's is actually pretty funny. And Wiseman, a former EMT and med student, has a real focus on safety, which I think is important in a book essentially written for newcomers to the scene.

It is appropriate that I make this first blog post when I really should be studying for my physics test tomorrow.

Speaking of African-American studies, from the rapper who said "Beatin up yo block, yeah I get my Emmitt Till on," I must draw everyone's attention to his amazing new video for the first single off the eagerly anticipated (amirite Pauri???) The Carter III:

The Best Books You've Read in College

I never got to take all the classes that sound interesting at Wesleyan, and often didn't finish all the reading even when I wanted to. Eventually, I started finishing readings over breaks as a way to enjoy some good reading/ease my guilt. Hopefully, this makes sense as an introduction. The point is, we're all going to make lists of the best books (/articles/maybe even other media, though films should perhaps be a separate list) we've read in college. We are going to share these lists. It is going to be awesome. While presumably these lists will be mostly comprised of literature, personally, I think it'd be cool if one or two of the best texts from everybody's area of scholarship (American Studies, English, Theatre, Philosophy, Dance, even Bio and Math [if that shit is readable/not boring]) also made some appearances. I like procrastinating, so I'ma start this business.

(Note: I'm gonna number stuff but there isn't any min/max. Also, I'll probably add more on later.)

1. Racial Formation in the United States, Michael Omi and Howard Winant. Probably the most academic bit on my list, this book is seriously so good. Do you want the book that everyone cites when they give their definition of race at the beginning of their books? Do you want a set of insanely useful theoretical tools for thinking about race and racism? Do you want to know why defining race as a function of class, nation, or ethnicity isn't good enough? Do you want to learn about all sorts of neo-conservative and neo-liberal racial projects? Do you want an absolute American-Studies-gasm? Of course you do.

2. A Different Mirror, Ronald Takaki. A survey history of the United States that bounces from ethnic group to ethnic group in each chapter. I know it's a good pleasure read cause Zaza actually emailed me from India once to tell me about this book she was reading and how it talked about African and Irish Americans totally not getting along and I was like 'OMG Takaki!' This book should replace high school history textbooks and will make up for your crappy high school American history education. Also, probably more fun/accessable than Omi & Winant.

3. King Lear, Shakespeare. So brutal. One of his more metal plays. Check out the Japanese film version: Ran, I think.

4. The Hunger of Memory, Richard Rodriguez. A truly excellent writer and memoirist. I started reading one of his other memoirs for my essay, then changed directions, and was finding myself getting in more fights with Rodriguez over politics, but his stuff is really so lyrical and thought-provoking.

5. Song of the Dodo, David Quamen. Could be wrong on author's name. Written for the public, sweet intro to biogeography, habitat loss, biodiversity, environmentalism. Also a travel book. I really liked it.

6. Moby Dick, Herman Melville. Totally deserving of its place in the American canon. As I write this, a song from a heavy metal semi-concept album based on this book has come on my iTunes, which is set on random. There you have it.

7. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. I like Douglass a lot, I'd be interested in reading the whole narrative and more of his stuff.

8. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs. Another cool slave narrative.

9. Real Indians, Eva Marie Garroutte. A totally ass-kicking exploration of the ways Indian and mixed Identity is defined in the United States. Really, really interesting and, for me, applicable to all sorts of topics.

10. Corregidora, Gayl Jones. Cool novel from my Afam women's lit course at UCD. Really bluesy. Another brutal one, but not as hopeless as Lear.

11. Dessa Rose, Sherley Ann Williams. Another one from that Afam class. Historical novel about a runaway slave and a white woman. Told from multiple perspectives. I don't think I tend to like attempts to deal with slavery through novelistic reimaginings, but I like this one.

12. Ulysses, James Joyce. OK, fair, I haven't finished it yet haven't had the time it requires you to give to it and it does require some fair effort it does being a modernist or is it approaching post modernist piece and Joyce loves to experiment and reference and allude and not use punctuation but I will finish it yes I said yes I will Yes.

13. The Satanic Verses, Salman Rushdie. Apparently the quintessential post-modern novel, according to my prof at UCD (I was in a lot of lit classes there). Experimental as hell, like Ulysses, but something you should confident that you can read, enjoy, and think about, even if, like me, you don't entirely get it. Rushdie's explorations of power, race, transnationalism, Britain, and India are fascinating, but his raw literary power is enough to put the book on your 'to read' list. This is the one that pissed off the Iranians so much they put out a death threat that forced Rushdie underground for years.

14. Dreaming in Cuban, Cristina Garcia. Garcia takes the multiple perspective thing from Dessa Rose to a whole other level in this novel about several generations of a Cuban family (apparently I write more and more like a book reviewer as I work through this post?). The mix of writing styles is really exciting, a bit of a virtuosic display. Deals with issues of family, identity, and international politics in a totally sweet way.

15. Black, White, and Jewish, Rebecca Walker. WEX has drilled the mantra of 'show don't tell' into my head impressively thoroughly. Walker shows better than pretty much any of the other authors I've read for 'Mixed in America.' One of the best in the alleged 'mixed race memoir' genre which I apparently am studying this semester.

16. Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison. Almost forgot this one. I think I like it more than The Bluest Eye.


Goddamn. I gotta remember to not start capitalizing my sentences at the beginning of these things, or else I'm stuck doing if for the rest of the post. Have fun reading all those, I expect solid analytical papers. Also, if our lists of favorite books overlap, or if some folks in the house have read stuff that people list, we might have quite the friggin' Venn diagram on our hands. Think about it.

1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has "evolved," yet he's continued to oppose key civil rights laws.¹

2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain "will make Cheney look like Gandhi."²

3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.³

4. McCain opposes a woman's right to choose. He said, "I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned."⁴

5. The Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children's health care bill last year, then defended Bush's veto of the bill.⁵

6. He's one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a "second job" and skip their vacations.⁶

7. Many of McCain's fellow Republican senators say he's too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He's erratic. He's hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."⁷

8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates.⁸

9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his "spiritual guide," Rod Parsley, believes America's founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a "false religion." McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church "the Antichrist" and a "false cult."⁹

10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.¹⁰
