obviously i wish mckinney had done well enough to garner some national attention but still: HELLZ YEAH MOTHERBITCHEZ!!!
before we get carried away with this 'yes we did' business - we haven't done much of anything yet. this is the first, and easiest step. the man is elected - and now the challenge is fulfilling the promises that this event holds. obama needs to be held to higher standards than any head of state that has come before him, because there's no reason barack obama shouldn't be the greatest president in american history up to this point. it's not just the past eight years we need to recover from. that's why i proudly and futilely cast my vote for cynthia mckinney this morning: because there are litterally hundreds of years of american history that from which we need to recover - hundreds of years of injustice and shitty presidents that we need to make up for. and ultimately, i believe something more radical than the democratic party is needed to fulfill the promise of the united states.
but tonight i'm a bit overwhelmed with joy and hope. this could be an amazing start of something. they keep trying to tell me this is the most important election of my lifetime, and i kinda hope they're right. i hope this is the turning point.
and also, i totally wish i could be on foss hill tonight: shit is almost assuredly bananas.

the easiest step? haven't done much? bah!
policy-wise, there might be a ways to go. but, regarding race in the modern world, this is arguably the greatest moment for black civilization in modern history (and by extension, a great feat for all of humanity). every step of his candidacy and election was an enormous, ground breaking, historic accomplishment. re-write the afam textbooks - a new page has been turned. i will never forget watching oprah and jesse jackson shed tears of joy on tv, and sharing a piece of their feelings as well.
i considered voting for mckinney (and hold great respect anyone who did), but thought to myself, obama might be the one legit candidate i ever get to vote for who i really and truly want to be my president.
today is truly a great day.
and, an amusing potential anecdote - 20-50 years from now, patterson, some child, related to you or not, will ask if you voted for obama, the first black president (and maybe a great president), and you'll have to give some convoluted and confusing answer about a better third party, another black candidate, and all that jazz, instead of a simple yes. thinking of that exchange amuses me...
